Have seen this before in the forums but never a definitive solution -- I use PHOCA on a variety of different servers - all with great success.
But on one of my oldest servers (that I have used PHOCA successfully before in the past...) the UPLOADER within PHOCA always spits out the "Not a Valid Image" error -- Yet on the built in Media Manager within Joomla, the uploaded works fine --
The only clue is that the PHOCA uploaded and the MEDIA Manager uploader display slightly different UPLOAD limits.
I notice that there is no where in configuration where I can manually set the path for uploaded images -- not that this matters much - as
it falls within that which makes the Joomla Media Manager happy.
All the best with any suggestions! Great product - (Also love Phoca Download a lot too!)

Re: Not a valid image 3.2.6
Hi, do you get this problem by all types (jpg, gif, png), by all size (did you test to upload small images) Where exactly do you get the problem - while upload, or while adding to system - in frontend or in backend?
If you find Phoca extensions useful, please support the project
