Downloads in another folder

I would like to have all the download folders in a folder called images/stories/phocadownload folder. When I set this path in the settings options, I can see all the folders, but it won't let me move to the folder or upload files to the folder. I have checked all the userrights and even with everytging read/write enabled it still will not work.
Is there a hardcoded line that keeps looking in the download folder in the root ?

Hi, do you get some errror while uploading - (do you upload in admin or frontend), are the permissions OK there?
