Glad you worked it out. I used a different component in the end that did this without any core hacks.

Yes it is difficult, there are different dependencies to root category behaviour (some security settings, two different layers - database and filesystem, etc.)
As I wrote earlier, this is in feature request list and I will take a look at it. But as there is a new 1.6 and I need to overwrite all extensions I made (over 60) to new framework, this will take some time
(the overwriting is going very slowly - overwriting 80% of Phoca Gallery took me 5 months
)
