I know this is an old topic, but I am searching for the same exact thing and I was wondering if you had the name of the component you used to do this for you.

Yes it is difficult, there are different dependencies to root category behaviour (some security settings, two different layers - database and filesystem, etc.)

As I wrote earlier, this is in feature request list and I will take a look at it. But as there is a new 1.6 and I need to overwrite all extensions I made (over 60) to new framework, this will take some time (the overwriting is going very slowly - overwriting 80% of Phoca Gallery took me 5 months )
