Phoca newbie questions - part 1

Post by nemmar »

Hi,
(I had to break up my questions into 2 posts since this forum has a character limit per post.)
Part 1:
I'm a newbie with Phoca Gallery but I know Joomla 2.5x very well. Today I downloaded and installed and configured Phoca Gallery on my J2.5.19 site.

I have never used Phoca extensions before but I downloaded the latest version and I read through the online documentation which was helpful. I found the tooltips in the site backend settings/config screens to be very helpful. But I still have some questions and I searched the forum for the answers but I could not find anything specific since most of the posts covered old versions of Joomla and Phoca. So I hope it's OK for me to ask all of my main questions in this one post...

1) Is it possible to allow Guests (non-registered users) to leave comments and ratings for images?

2) How can I use "internal comments" for allowing image comments? I searched the forum and found a post talking about "internal comments" but I don't know how to set that up. I don't want to install a third-party comments extension (Jcomments, etc.) since I don't want to add too many extensions that can slow down my site pages with Java, etc.

3) How can I adjust the choices available in the "Ordering" pagination drop-down list for sorting galleries? I don't need all of the default choices. I only want to use a few like hits, ratings, etc. so is it possible to enable/disable some of those choices? Or is that only possible with a core hack edit?

4) How can I remove/disable the "All" choice in the "Display Num" pagination drop-down list for sorting galleries? I don't need to show "All" because my galleries have hundreds of photos and it could timeout the browsers.

5) What's the best way to add more space for the description text underneath images in details views? If I have about 3+ lines of text for an image description it gets covered by the Rating stars and rating text about logging in to rate. Is there a way to adjust the amount of space at the bottom of an image to display more text so it's not covered up?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

1) no, see similar posts why not (security reasons)
2) internal comments are standard comments - just enable them in options so they will be displayed on the site
3) this needs to be customized directly in the code in pagination classes :-(
4) see 3) administrator\components\com_phocagallery\libraries\phocagallery\pagination\paginationuserimage.php - comment the all option
5) you can resize the box in options: https://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-g ... -menu-item

https://www.phoca.cz/documentation/categ ... ca-gallery

Hi Jan,

Thanks for replying to my post. I'm not clear on a few things in your answers noted below:

2) internal comments are standard comments - just enable them in options so they will be displayed on the site

I'm not seeing any comment box listed under the images in Detail View (I don't use popups). Here are my Phoca settings:
Phoca Gallery Options > Users > Comment Setting > Display Image Comments > "Yes"
Phoca Gallery Options > Users > Comment Setting > External Comment System > "None"

3) this needs to be customized directly in the code in pagination classes :-(
4) see 3) administrator\components\com_phocagallery\libraries\phocagallery\pagination\paginationuserimage.php - comment the all option

Okay, thanks. Can I recommend that this be added to possible features/options in future versions of Phoca Gallery? That way a core edit would not be needed.

5) you can resize the box in options:

The Rating stars and user login text floats over the image description text and covers it so the text cannot be read clearly. Is there a way to have that line float below the image description text? Here are my Phoca settings:
Phoca Gallery Options > Display > Category View Settings > Display Image Description in Box > "No"
Phoca Gallery Options > Display > Category View Settings > Font Size of Image Description > "12"
Phoca Gallery Options > Display > Category View Settings > Box Height of Image Description > "50"
Phoca Gallery Options > Display > Category View Settings > Number of Characters in Image Description > "300"

Here is a same of the source code with the Rating stars and user login text:
<strong>Rating</strong>: 0 / 0 vote&nbsp;&nbsp;</td><td style="text-align:left"><ul class="star-rating"><li class="current-rating" style="width:0px"></li><li><span class="star1"></span></li><li><span class="stars2"></span></li><li><span class="stars3"></span></li><li><span class="stars4"></span></li><li><span class="stars5"></span></li></ul></td><td style="text-align:left" colspan="4" class="pg-rating-msg">&nbsp;&nbsp;Only registered and logged in users can rate this image</td></tr></table>

Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

2) aha, now I understand, in detail window in no popup only external comments are possible to display :-(

3) added to feature request list (not sure if this will be implemented as there are a lot of parameters and such needs to be removed - to save memory, so adding any new parameter really needs to be reviewed)

5) can you paste a screenshot to know what you exactly mean?

Hi Jan,

5) can you paste a screenshot to know what you exactly mean?

I turned off the "Rating" feature of Phoca Gallery but I am still having problems with the Slideshow buttons covering the photo text. Here are some screenshots.

1) This screenshot shows the photo description text has the Slideshow buttons floating (covering) over it:

Image

2) This screenshot shows how the photo description text gets cutoff when I disable the Slideshow buttons:

Image

I would like to keep the Slideshow buttons enabled and have the photo description text display completely without the buttons floating over the text. I removed the Slideshow Javascript from the source code but I use the << Previous - Next >> buttons so users can scroll through the photos.

Let me know what advice you have on how I can fix this.

Thanks.

Hi, did you try to use other popup method - to test if this is problem in all popups? Did you try to test it with another template? Try to set larger size for the popup in administration

Hi Jan,

I do not use popups for my Phoca Galleries. Instead I have the options set for the image thumbnails to open in Details Views. The Details Views are great and what I need instead of popups.

Is there a way for me to fix this in Details Views?

Thanks.

The problem is, I cannot reproduce this problem, tested it and see no problem there, did you test it with standard template?

Anyway you can customize it in output directly:

components/com_phocagallery/views/detail/tmpl/ ...

Hi Jan,

Are you talking about the Joomla site template? Or is there a Phoca Gallery template I should be using for the gallery pages?

If the problem is the Joomla site template, then I will need to wait until I find another site template to use. If it's a Phoca template then let me know where I can set or select a "standard template" that you mention in you post.

Thanks.

Hi, I mean standard Joomla! template (not a theme). To know if there is a problem with template, you need to test it with standard template. If you get the same output, then really cannot say what can be wrong there and you will need to try to change the output

components/com_phocagallery/views/detail/tmpl/ ...
