Workaround for unable to create new category

I went to add a new category and couldn't find the 'new' option. Instead I had a message being displayed that said "JHtmlBatch: :language not supported."

Searching the forum here it would seem that the solution to this is to upgrade Joomla from v1.7 to v2.5. Unfortunately the hosting company my client is using is not good. While they offer Joomla it is only the version that they already have installed and can't be upgraded.

However I discovered a work around. If I edit an existing category there is a button that says save and new. if I don't change anything on an existing category and hit that 'save and new' then I am into the screen for creating a new category and life is good.

Not ideal but a lot easier than fighting with the hosting company about upgrading.
