Display random subcategory's thumbnail when viewing parent

I sort my categories by Year > Event. All the Year categories have no images within them, just other Event subcategories.

I've chosen which image is first in each Event subcategory so that it shows up as that subcategory's thumbnail. I'd like to have the thumbnails for the Year categories show a random image out of those few subcategory thumbnails. I'd like that random image to change with each page refresh.

Is this possible to do?

Hi, yes, there is option to display random images instead of folder icon.

I'm aware.
I'm asking if it's possible to show a random picture out of a select few pictures (the ones that are displayed as the event images).

This way the year picture shows something more exciting than a random picture from within an event.

Hmmm, then this needs to be customized in the code
