takeover picturs from old website

hello.

my old website will be removed and a new one is implemented at the moment with joomla 1.7.
one of my main problem is that i have a historical gallery that was implmented with PHP. i guess that thousands of pictures must be moved to new gallery - separated via folders. for this i try phoca gallery at the moment.
for the first view it looks very good but i cannot create manually all folders with pictures in it again. this will costs a lot of time. i tried to create via FTP, folders in "phocalgalerie"-folder where all pictures are located. in backend i can see this folders but when i want to add them to categories i get an error.
so my question: is there any other possibility to go ahead? maybe one way i dont see at the moment!?
