unpublished category filter broken?

I have a number of categories which are in an unpublished state. When I upload new photos using the multiple add option, I set them to unpublished, which causes the categories to also remain unpublished, which is what I want. When I go to the categories tab and select "unpublished", I get nothing. If I set it to show all, the new categories are marked as unpublished. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

it's version 2.7.6

Hmm, checking the filter state, and it seems ok, the unpublished categories are displayed in case "unpublished" is set. Really no idea what is wrong there?

Choosing "Published" works, but "unpublished" displays an empty data set (nothing returned).

Is there somewhere in the database or files that I can look to narrow in on the problem? I have no problem looking behind the scenes if I know where to look.

Then you need to see the filtering (published, unpublished) code (php) to test what is wrong there, in category view (or image view) in admin
