There is no any difference. Global setting of parameters doesn''t display captcha. The same effect is on local sttinhg of parameters for Captcha. So I've guestbook without Captcha image and reloacd icon.

hi, i've had the same problem of not seeing the captcha.
i did found out my problem though.
it appears captcha has some problem with the global config searchmachine friendly url "on".
mabe its because i'm working localhost or not but that was my problem.
i hope this helps you to.

there can be more problems:

1. the link to captcha image is not correctly created (e.g. because of wrong SEF link creation)
2. GD library doesn't work
3. Some functions are missed in GD library
4. Before rendering the image some php error or php warning is displayed, it is not problem for the site but for displaying image it is problem, if some error is rendering before image creating, the image will be not displayed

so if e.g. 1. is the problem, then disabling SEF will help...

It may be. My site was installed on source files which i've all uploaded via not to good FTP protocol. It is possible that of source files was not good. Now I've installed on the same YoYo.pl server thr next joola 1.5 web site. But now I've done this with the preinstalled english version of Joomla 1.5. I've uploaded only via FTP only polish language files. Now I have polish version of Jokomla 1.5 and good working Phoca Guestbook on that site.
