Update to 4.1.2 - no Upgrade button

Post by christine »

Good afternoon,

So, how to start - due having several problems/questions

a) on a test-site and b) on a live site (both J 3.3.6) I tried the update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2
weeks ago the 4.1.2 was released. After that: Under: "Check for update" current version was still showing: 4.1.1

So, I updated the b) live site to 4.1.2. Of Course: All my former changes of default.css were overwriten. OK ... made again = OK.

Question 1) Erweiterungen > Verwalten shows still: version 3.7.8 (Why?) Tried to repair DB, "Erweiterungen" " Verwalten" to "Überprüfen" etc. etc. - no failure, no bad response.

Since apprx. 2 weeks "Check for update" shows corretly now: current version: 4.1.2 = OK.

Then I tried to make an update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 on two test-sites.

Usually in the past, after installing the current version, the system ALWAYS come up again with:
"Installation or Upgrade". But now, there was no "Upgrade" mentioned. .....

So, as I knew, that this will again 'overrule' my former CSS changes, I de-installed the phoca-gallery (on the test-site) of course :|
Installing the 4.1.2 - and now: No images in frontend. Media/Phocagallery > all images/thumbnails are there.
OK, I think, this is the problem for me only .....
---------------
Finally Question 2) Why is there no: "Installation or Upgrade" possibility as in the past - as mentioned before?

I also checked several times differences between all folders etc. etc.

Thanks for help, greetings, Christine

Hi,

0) default.css - yes this CSS is default and is a part of Phoca Gallery and everytime the component will be updated, it will be overwritten - call your customized.css with other name which does not exist in Phoca Gallery package, so it will be not overwritten by updating

1) 3.7.8 - hmm - really no idea - Phoca Gallery has no tool to somehow affect the Extension manager - do you get it in Extension Manager?

Install and Upgrade are now fully managed by Joomla! Extension Manger - Phoca Gallery does not install itself, it is installed by Joomla! Extension Manager - somtimes obsolete data will stay in database, so it is good to uninstall the component manually and install it again (don't ask me why, I don't know as I am not developer of the Extension Manager :-( - See: https://www.phoca.cz/documents/16-joomla ... m-manually - but be aware this will delete all data - so this can be used only if you really want to uninstall/install the component - which removes all data)

2) As in latest Joomla! version there is no such option so standard Joomla! mechanism is used:

- Joomla! installs the component when it will not find any item about the component in database
- Joomla! upgrades the component when it will find the information in database - this happens automatically

While upgrade all files are overwritten and no data in database changed - so this is why custom.css should have own names not the same like they are in installation package as all files stored in installation package will overwrite the same named files.

Hi Jan,

thank you for your comments :|
Jan wrote:0) default.css - yes this CSS is default and is a part of Phoca Gallery and everytime the component will be updated, it will be overwritten - call your customized.css with other name which does not exist in Phoca Gallery package, so it will be not overwritten by updating
as already described, in the *past* in J 2.5 there always was after installing the latest version: "installing OR upgrade" - and CSS data were not overwritten. As long this 'new' situation will exist, I will copy my CSS data to template.css ....
1) 3.7.8 - hmm - really no idea - Phoca Gallery has no tool to somehow affect the Extension manager - do you get it in Extension Manager?
Of course .... again ... as in the past ..... I always make extensions update via the Extension Manager.
NOT via Directory, NOT via/from URL > always: "Update Package File".
... so it is good to uninstall the component manually and install it again (don't ask me why, I don't know as I am not developer of the Extension Manager :-( - See: https://www.phoca.cz/documents/16-joomla ... m-manually - but be aware this will delete all data - so this can be used only if you really want to uninstall/install the component - which removes all data)
On my testsite I uninstalled and installed it again .... Frontend: no images. So, I will NOT do this on my live site :|
- Joomla! upgrades the component when it will find the information in database - this happens automatically
hmmm ...
While upgrade all files are overwritten and no data in database changed - so this is why custom.css should have own names not the same like they are in installation package as all files stored in installation package will overwrite the same named files.
see above, I will do accordingly.

So, I,m not happy and for the moment: I will not 'touch' my live site, even, it will show me under: Erweiterungen > Überprüfen > 3.7.8 but installed: 2.4.2, Frontend OK. components/com_phocagallery/install/sql/mysql looks also OK. (my prefix instead of: #_extension)

I will study your above Link.

Thanks for your help, regards Christine

Hi,

0) yes - a lot of parameters were moved to CSS so there is new feature when you can set own CSS and it will be not overwritten while upgrade, when you set it to your template.css it can be overwritten e.g. by template upgrade. It sounds like paradox, but this feature was added to not lose customized style - as in previous version there was not possible to set own css with own name so every changes could be overwritten.

Upgrade vs. Install function was a specific feature of Phoca Gallery but in newest Joomla! this is not possible - if it will be possible, I will be the first who will add the feature back. I have added this function as for me it was logical but since newest version, there is no option to add such install procedure so the standard installation procedure of Joomla! is used - all is managed by Joomla! - Extension Manager - so this is really a question on Joomla! developers how the components are installed :-(

Are you really run the right Phoca Gallery in right Joomla! version?

- Phoca Gallery 1 - 2 ... Joomla! 1.5
- Phoca Gallery 3 ... Joomla! 2.5
- Phoca Gallery 4 ... Joomla! 3

I really cannot explain why the extension manager displays such confusing version there

you are right, it's paradox. This new feature is of course very helpful. But before the next update, I will copy my CSS changes to template.css

Jan, I was thinking, that I made some mistake about above. But I'm not the only one  http://www.joomlaportal.de/joomla-3-x-e ... ost1565822

Thank you again for your answer - next time I will hv a look by time. I was too busy with other things, resp. problems ......
You are doing a great Job. Regards also to Benno. Sometimes we are talking together at joomla-forum.
