Cannot add sub-categories on front end

I am using version 4.2.2 on Joomla 3.4.5

I can add a category but when I try to add a subcategory the category selection disappears just after I select it. The drop down list has the category I created, I select it and as soon as I move to the next step it disappears.

Actually on any screen on the front that requires you to select a category, it will disappear when you move to the next step of what you are doing. You get an error to select a category but the selection you make does not take.

On my website as just a registered user I am able to create a main category. One of the problems I am having is when I call up the user photo admin and I try to upload a photo or create a subcategory it ask that I select a category. I select a category but as soon as I tab off of it, it changes back to the default "Select Category" and I cannot upload a photo or create a sub category.

I need the users to be able to create both their main category and subcategories under that heading.

did you set:
backend --> Components --> Phoca Gallery --> Control Panel --> Options --> Users --> User Control Panel Settings --> Enable Direct Subcategory Creation=Yes

Enable Direct Subcategory Creation (Yes | No) If Yes subcategories can be created directly in the category view. Only users who have rights to upload images into parent category can create a subcategory in this category
