How to display the next X images on the details page?

Using a non popup view of the detailed image, how do I show the next X number of images on a details page of an image, where X is the number of small/medium images to be shown. e.g. as shown in the image example below, where the black box is the current image being viewed and the green boxes are the next 8 (x) images in the gallery, clicking on any of the green box images will load the details page of that image and again the green boxes will show the next 8 (or less) small/medium images.

for thumbs preview you can use highslide. it has many settings for this

Not what I am wanting, that uses a popup which is not what I am using, I am using no popup. I did try the Highslide but since it is a pop up it is no good for what we are trying to do.

Any other ideas, anyone?
