How do I FTP images to Phoca Gallery correctly

I have Joomla 2.5 and Phoca gallery 3.1.5. I created a folder called gallery under phocagallery and then created folders mexico and us under gallery. I then FTPed images to these folders. Finally, I created a category structure the same as my folder structure: category = gallery, subcategories = mexico and us. Phoca Gallery thinks I have no photos at all. How do I get Phoca Gallery to see these and assign them to the correct category?

you don't have to create the categories manually as you did. if you use multiple add and select a folder to add, phoca gallery creates the category automatically, and subcategories from subfolders.

I understand what you are saying, but I have already FTP'd the photos to the web site. How do I get Phoca Gallery to recognize them? There must be a way to use FTP to load photos into folders that have been previously created that correspond to categories that were also previously created.

Another question concerns addding photos after the category has been created. Suppose I use multiple add to upload a number of photos and Phoca Gallery creates a category called misc because I specify that as a folder to create. At a later date, I want to add more photos to misc. Will Phoca Gallery let me use multiple add, indicate I want the photos to go to the misc folder, and not create a new category within the original category?

1. in addition to uploading them, you have add the images to the gallery using one of the procedures described in the documentation. if you upload new files to a folder containing other images that are already added to a gallery, you have to pick the new ones and add them to a gallery. depending on the amount of images in a folder it might be easier to delete the existing ones and add everything form that folder with one click afterwards. for that reason I always create new subfolders when adding new photos to an existing folder.

2. if you use multiple add and select a folder to add, it will create a category for each of the folders. if you don't want that, open the folder and select just the content (and not the folder itself), then it will only add the images to the specified category.
