Trouble Installing

I have been trying to install the Gallery on my server for 2 days now following all instructions and help I could find - to no avail.

I have Joomla 1.7 running and have downloaded the com_phocagallery_v3.1.1.zip to install. When I use Extension manager to upload and install, I get :

"JFolder: :files: Path is not a folder. Path: /var/www/vhosts/ahp.co.nz/httpdocs/joomla2/tmp/install_4ed52f0bb6020
JFolder: :folder: Path is not a folder. Path: /var/www/vhosts/ahp.co.nz/httpdocs/joomla2/tmp/install_4ed52f0bb6020
JFolder: :files: Path is not a folder. Path: /var/www/vhosts/ahp.co.nz/httpdocs/joomla2/tmp/install_4ed52f0bb6020
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file"

So I tried the FTP instructions, where I copied all the correct files onto the server into the correct folder - then tried to FTP install -
"JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file. Path does not have a valid package."

- where to next??
