Can't get Gallery to show

Sorry to sound daft but I just can't get the Gallery to show on a page in Joomla. I am very confused as one part of the documentation says create a category and then from the front end of Joomla place this script where you want the Gallery to show. Script is {pgsimple id=1} where "1" is the ID of the gallery. The Quick Start Guide says you must create a menu item choosing "Gallery" as the type. I have created a gallery, uploaded 7 images to it and these are shown in the list of images in the category. I have tried the script method and all that happens on saving is the actual script shows on the page, no gallery. The other method, creating a menu item just returns the message Category empty! The Category title is correct and this is the one with the seven images in it. I have checked to make sure everything is enabled as it should be so I am completely stumped. I don't want to have to create a new menu item for each gallery as the fact that I could put a gallery inside an existing page was the main reason for choosing Phoca. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
first off all, unfortunately you did not mention which version of Phoca Gallery you use.
This is important, because the code you use inside an article is code for Phoca Gallery Simple Plugin. This Plugin works only with Phoca Gallery Component for joomla v1.6/1.7
If you use joomla v1.6 or 1.7 and you paste this code {pgsimple id=1} inside an article and you see only the code in frontend, this happens normaly when Phoca Gallery Simple Plugin is not installed or not enabled.

The Quick Start Guide says you must create a menu item choosing "Gallery" as the type.

It says:

Choose Phoca Gallery » Phoca Gallery Category List Layout.

In joomla v.1.6/1.7 it's called List Of Categories (Categories View)

I don't want to have to create a new menu item for each gallery as the fact that I could put a gallery inside an existing page was the main reason for choosing Phoca.

If you create a menu item Phoca Gallery Category List Layout you don`t need to create a new menu item for each gallery.
