Tweek for my client's specific need

Hi there. I am in need of having a simple tweek done to do either one of two things in regards to the anchor tag of the images in the gallery.
1. Remove the link from the image and only allow the external link to be active.
2. Allow the link for the image to be an external link.

Here is the reason for this tweek. The client has an existing static html site with a huge number of galleries. It will be too much work to bring over all those images. So what I would like to do is to take 1 thumbnail and link it to one gallery. I would open the gallery using shadowbox. So manually, the code is simple. I already tried tweeking the php files to accomplish this and I have gotten as far as basically setting the link for the image to "#" but I do not know how exactly to take the input from the external link property and use it. And then there are at least 2 php files I have found that both have an impact on the image link. Can anyone help me here.
