404 error for public - any work around?

I have my Section, Category, and File all set to "Registered". When the public clicks on a plugin link to a file, they are taken to a 404 page. If someone is logged in, they see the file. Any way to stop that 404 and prompt them to log in?

found issue - i did not have a menu item for this extension yet
