Front-end uploading isn't working

Post by CharlieMon »

I'm able to upload images via the back-end, no problem.

But, when I'm logged in as a user and try to upload an image from the front-end, it thinks for a few moments, then brings me back to the uploader -- but no images are uploaded. They are not in the folders and they are not listed in the Admin back-end pages.

I believe I have things set correctly in the parameters, and I am not getting any errors in the error log.

Help? Thanks!

Hi,

could you try to upload with a template like rhuk_milkyway. Maybe your template doesn't display system messages. If it doesn't work, you usually get a message.

Hello Carolien -thanks for the response.

Good call. I changed the template and found the error message.

Now, the issue was that the user directory did not exist. However, it was defined in the "category" settings and the user was assigned to that category. So, I assumed having it defined would create it.

But no...

So, how do we get these directories created without giving users access to our server structure? Seems to me there must be a way to create a user directory without having to give FTP access to all the users so they can create directories -- that just isn't safe.

Otherwise, we're required to create a directory for the users -- but to do it by hand via FTP or SSH.

Hi,

if you use the backend to name a folder, then you must create it via FTP I think.

If you let your user create a category (via the menu item type 'User Control Panel Layout), then Phoca Gallery creates a folder.

EDIT: more info see: https://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-g ... ser-upload

Hello, and thanks again for the reply. I think we're almost there.

I have the "enable user control panel" setting set to "yes". However, on the front end, there is no tab/link/method for creating a category. I see two tabs -- comments and upload. I have verified that the menu item type is:

Phoca Gallery User Control Panel Layout

so that should be good. Where should I see this way to create a category?

By the way, I have checked, and I do not see a way to create a category with any template including rhuk_milkyway.

Hi,

you should see two tabs (and no images), but this should be: edit category and upload. (comments wouldn't make sense, 'cause it's not related to a category)

Which version are you using? Then I can try to reproduce the problem.

Uh oh...hang on, we might have been having some other issue, perhaps a cache problem.

I now see the "edit category" tab by clicking through the User Control Panel Layout menu item. And, if the user has no category associated with him/her, they get a "create category" tab. That makes sense...

But...because we're using Community Builder, we have groups and then members associated with each of those groups. We're assigning one registered user per group to be that group's leader, and only those leaders have access to upload images.

Then, we're associating each leader with a specific category. This way, each category is a "group photo gallery". In other words, the category called "Group A Pictures" is the gallery for the group known as "Group A".

This will all work if the groups only need one category...but, in reality, each group needs many sub-categories. In our scenario, a sub-category could be a collection of pictures from a group's event (for example) so all the pictures from that event would be in one sub-category, like "Group A's dinner party pictures".

But, it doesn't appear that his will work, since we can't create sub-categories, right?

Further, if we created additional categories to replace sub-categories -- one category for each event, called something like "Group A: Dinner Party 03.18.09" -- we'd quickly have 100s of categories and scrolling through the list would take pages of categories in the list.

Unless there is a way for users to create sub-categories...?

I haven't heard back, so I'm assuming this can't be done and CB-type sites cannot use Phoca. If I'm wrong, please let me know...otherwise, we'll have to find another solution.

Hi, this is the feature request, I am working on this, but it takes a time, because there are security problems which should be solved and not only adding subcategories need to be solved, then you need to have some option to edit it, delete it, publish it, etc, so the whole framework for frontend needs to be written...
