URL and menu / categories structure

Post by Reddar »

Hi Jan,

I will try to explain a new issue i'm facing.

I do not understand why when i open a category, for example here "La soirée"

Image

the next page adress is Accueil/Medias/2023-55/Dimanche/La soirée instead of Accueil/Medias/20233-55/Election des Miss / La soirée, It is not consistent with the menu and the categories structure.

Image

Other example : if you go https://carnaval-spc.fr/medias/archives ... n-des-miss and you choose "La soirée"
you will have Accueil /Medias /2023 - 55/Dimanche/La soirée instead of
Accueil /Medias /Archives/2019 - 51/Election des Miss/La soirée.

Thank yo for your help.

Hi, how many menu links to Phoca Gallery do you use? See:
https://www.phoca.cz/blog/1230-how-to-c ... -in-joomla

Since Joomla 4, the SEF rules changed in Joomla, and there is no words like "category, categories, or detail or image" inside the URL so the system cannot differntiate between different views and it does not have information about which correct menu link to use. So only one main menu link should be used and others should be done as absolute links (copied from frontend).

Hi Jan,

I have carrefully read your article but i don't know how to adapt my site.

Let take a example

Menu structure :

Media -- 2023 -- Sunday
Media -- 2023 -- Saturday
Media--- 2023 ---Friday

The "Sunday" menu item is linked to categories "Sunday"
The "Saturday" menu item is linked to categories "Saturday"
The "Friday" menu item is linked to a category view.

When i switch to Friday i get a category view and the dreadcrump is

media / 2023 / Friday : OK

When i switch to Sunday, i have a categories view and when i click to a category the breadcrump is

media / 2023 / Sunday / Category A : OK

When i switch to Saturday i have a categories view and when i click the category C the breadcrump is

media / 2023 / Sunday / Category C : NOK

What can i do to get media / 2023 / Saturday / Category C ?

I don't have any menu link to Category C so i don't have absolute link that i could copied from frontend.

Create one menu link - to categories view, then go to your frontend and click to go to e.g. first category (copy the link from the URL bar) and create menu link with absolute URL (this will be not a link to Phoca Gallery, but to System Link - URL):

In such case, there will be no switch between menu links.

Phoca categories structure

Image
Joomla menu structure

Image

I have unpublished the menu link “Dimanche”, in the frontend clicked on “Samedi” menu
https://carnaval-spc.fr/medias/2023-55/samedi

clicked on “Les enfants” category, copy the URL
https://carnaval-spc.fr/medias/2023-55/ ... es-enfants

Create a menu link to the previous absolute url

Republished the menu “Dimanche”, clicked In the frontend on “Samedi” menu, “Les enfants” category,

Problem still there, the URL is

//carnaval-spc.fr/medias/2023-55/dimanche/50-2023-55e/57-samedi/60-les-enfants
Instead of
//carnaval-spc.fr/medias/2023-55/samedi/50-2023-55e/57-samedi/60-les-enfants

Hi, how many menu links to Phoca Gallery do you have now? (only the native Phoca Gallery menu links)?

Hi,

For the above example : 2 link to Phoca Gallery (list of categories, categories view)

For the full site : 18, 10 to categories view, 8 to category view.

And, when only one menu link is active? Does this happen? As written above, unfortunately, there is new router system in Joomla and such needs to have one menu link to work in such complicated category structures :-(

I don't know. I didn't try because i don't know how to manage my current Phoca Gallery and menu structure with one menu link.

And also i'm not fan of absolute url usage.

The only work around i found is to create hidden menu link to category when the existing menu link to categories view

Example :
Image
Image

Then in front end if i click on “Samedi” menu, “Les enfants” category, it's ok :

//carnaval-spc.fr/medias/2023-55/samedi/les-enfants

Hi, for tests, we need to have only one menu link enabled (one menu link to categories view). To test if this work when one menu link is enabled only.

As the Joomla router changed in Joomla 4|5, there are no more parts in URLs which were there and helped the identification of parameters in URL. so this is recommneded now:
https://www.phoca.cz/blog/1230-how-to-c ... -in-joomla
Nobody likes absolute Links but with them you can avoid of changing parameters in URL (because more menu links mean more different SEF Url formats)
