I did not find the answer, but after some tests, I guess you cannot use PGSlideshow to display a category that contains categories, right ?
you must be at the lowest level ?

not sure what you mean with 'PGSlideshow'. If you mean the Detail View of Phoca Gallery Component or Phoca Gallery Slideshow Plugin you are right.
