How to remove Yogurt from Granite

Moderate urgency 15–30 minutes Difficulty 3/5

First 60 seconds

The first sixty seconds decide how this turns out. Scrape away the excess yogurt from the granite, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. A mix of milk protein and live cultures that behaves much like milk but sits thicker on the surface, and dense and heat-resistant, but a sealed surface can still stain if liquid sits too long.

What you'll need

  • Cold water
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar

Step by step

  1. Gather your materials before you start — set out everything so you are not searching mid-treatment.
  2. Cold water: flush or blot with cold water — never warm.
  3. Dish soap: mix a few drops with cold water into a light suds.
  4. White vinegar: mix one part vinegar with two parts water.
  5. Rinse and blot dry with a clean cloth, then press with dry towels and change them until no more transfers onto the towel.

Do not do this

  • Hot or warm water. Heat cooks the stain into the fibers, making it permanent.
  • Rubbing the spot. It pushes the stain deeper and spreads it outward.

Common questions

Can I use hot water to remove yogurt from granite?

No. Heat sets this type of stain permanently, so always start with cold water and check the surface stays cool throughout treatment.

Is it safe to scrub the stain out?

Scrubbing usually makes things worse. Blot or lift instead of rubbing, working from the outer edge inward so the stain does not spread.

What if the yogurt stain has already dried?

A dried stain takes longer and may need repeated treatments, but the same agents still work — just re-wet the area gently first to reactivate the stain before treating it.
