How to remove Vomit from Vinyl Flooring

Time-sensitive 5–15 minutes Difficulty 4/5

First 60 seconds

Do not reach for a rag and start scrubbing yet. Scrape away the excess vomit from the vinyl flooring, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. Stomach acid can etch some surfaces, so speed matters as much as the agent used, and resists moisture well but can discolor if strong solvents sit on the surface.

What you'll need

  • Baking soda
  • An enzyme cleaner
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar

Step by step

  1. Gather your materials before you start — set out everything so you are not searching mid-treatment.
  2. Baking soda: make a paste with water and let it sit before brushing off.
  3. An enzyme cleaner: saturate fully — enzymes need contact time to break down the residue.
  4. Dish soap: mix a few drops with cold water into a light suds.
  5. White vinegar: mix one part vinegar with two parts water.
  6. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the surface fully so no residue film is left behind.

Do not do this

  • Hot or warm water. Heat cooks the stain into the fibers, making it permanent.
  • Rubbing the spot. It pushes the stain deeper and spreads it outward.
  • Any heat source (iron, hair dryer, tumble dryer). Heat on vinyl flooring can bond the stain permanently or warp the material.

Common questions

Can I use hot water to remove vomit from vinyl flooring?

No. Heat sets this type of stain permanently, so always start with cold water and check the surface stays cool throughout treatment.

Is it safe to scrub the stain out?

Scrubbing usually makes things worse. Blot or lift instead of rubbing, working from the outer edge inward so the stain does not spread.

What if the vomit stain has already dried?

A dried stain takes longer and may need repeated treatments, but the same agents still work — just re-wet the area gently first to reactivate the stain before treating it.
