How to remove Tar / Asphalt from Engineered Wood Flooring

Move fast, but move carefully. Scrape away the excess tar / asphalt from the engineered wood flooring, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. A petroleum-based residue that softens with a lubricant before it will lift instead of smear, and a thin real-wood veneer over plywood that can delaminate if moisture gets underneath it.

Step by step
- Test first: dab your chosen agent on a hidden corner of the engineered wood flooring and wait 2–3 minutes to confirm no discoloration.
- WD-40 or a similar lubricant: spray lightly, wait a minute, then wipe from the outside in.
- A dull knife or old gift card: scrape gently at a low angle, never digging in.
- Dish soap: work a tiny amount into the spot on a barely-damp cloth, then wipe off immediately — do not saturate the material.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the surface fully so no residue film is left behind.
Do not do this
- Hot water as a first step. It spreads oil-based stains before they can be lifted.
- Rubbing the spot. It pushes the stain deeper and spreads it outward.
- Any heat source (iron, hair dryer, tumble dryer). Heat on engineered wood flooring can bond the stain permanently or warp the material.
- Soaking the engineered wood flooring. Oversaturating this material causes water rings, warping, or permanent staining of its own.
Common questions
