How to remove Soot / Charcoal from Microfiber

Move fast, but move carefully. Scrape away the excess soot / charcoal from the microfiber, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. Fine carbon particles that grind deeper into fibers if wiped before the loose soot is lifted away, and many microfiber blends water-spot badly and clean best with a solvent-only method.

- A stiff, dry brush
- Rubbing alcohol
- Dish soap
Step by step
- Test first: dab your chosen agent on a hidden corner of the microfiber and wait 2–3 minutes to confirm no discoloration.
- A stiff, dry brush: brush off once fully dry, not while damp.
- Rubbing alcohol: dab with alcohol on a cotton pad, working from the edge in.
- Dish soap: work a tiny amount into the spot on a barely-damp cloth, then wipe off immediately — do not saturate the material.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the surface fully so no residue film is left behind.
Do not do this
- Adding water before brushing off the loose powder. Water turns dry powder into a sticky paste that binds deeper into the fibers.
- Wiping side to side. It spreads the stain into a wider area — blot straight down instead.
- Any heat source (iron, hair dryer, tumble dryer). Heat on microfiber can bond the stain permanently or warp the material.
- Soaking the microfiber. Oversaturating this material causes water rings, warping, or permanent staining of its own.

Can I use hot water to remove soot / charcoal from microfiber?
