How to remove Slime from Denim

Moderate urgency 15–30 minutes Difficulty 3/5

First 60 seconds

Move fast, but move carefully. Scrape away the excess slime from the denim, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. A glue-and-borax polymer that behaves like a rubbery gum and lifts best once hardened by cold, and tightly woven cotton twill that can bleed indigo dye if scrubbed too hard.

What you'll need

  • Ice cubes
  • A dull knife or old gift card
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step by step

  1. Test first: dab your chosen agent on a hidden corner of the denim and wait 2–3 minutes to confirm no discoloration.
  2. Ice cubes: hold ice in a bag against the spot to harden it.
  3. A dull knife or old gift card: scrape gently at a low angle, never digging in.
  4. Rubbing alcohol: dab with alcohol on a cotton pad, working from the edge in.
  5. Rinse and blot dry with a clean cloth, then press with dry towels and change them until no more transfers onto the towel.

Do not do this

  • Warm water. It softens the material instead of hardening it for removal.
  • Pulling or picking at fibers. This can tear delicate weaves.

Common questions

Can I use hot water to remove slime from denim?

Hot water is not usually necessary, but on denim it is safer to stay with cool water regardless, since tightly woven cotton twill that can bleed indigo dye if scrubbed too hard.

Is it safe to scrub the stain out?

Scrubbing usually makes things worse. Blot or lift instead of rubbing, working from the outer edge inward so the stain does not spread.

What if the slime stain has already dried?

A dried stain takes longer and may need repeated treatments, but the same agents still work — just re-wet the area gently first to reactivate the stain before treating it.
