How to remove Chewing Gum from Spandex / Lycra
First 60 seconds
Move fast, but move carefully. Scrape away the excess chewing gum from the spandex / lycra, lifting solids off the surface without pressing them further in. Gum base is a rubbery polymer that only releases cleanly once frozen hard, and the elastane fibers lose their stretch permanently if exposed to high heat or harsh solvents.
What you'll need
- Ice cubes
- A dull knife or old gift card
- Rubbing alcohol
Step by step
- Test first: dab your chosen agent on a hidden corner of the spandex / lycra and wait 2–3 minutes to confirm no discoloration.
- Ice cubes: hold ice in a bag against the spot to harden it.
- A dull knife or old gift card: scrape gently at a low angle, never digging in.
- Rubbing alcohol: dab with alcohol on a cotton pad, working from the edge in.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the surface fully so no residue film is left behind.
Do not do this
- Pulling gum off by hand. It stretches and presses residue deeper into the weave.
- Warm water. It softens the material instead of hardening it for removal.
- Any heat source (iron, hair dryer, tumble dryer). Heat on spandex / lycra can bond the stain permanently or warp the material.
Common questions
Can I use hot water to remove chewing gum from spandex / lycra?
Hot water is not usually necessary, but on spandex / lycra it is safer to stay with cool water regardless, since the elastane fibers lose their stretch permanently if exposed to high heat or harsh solvents.
Is it safe to scrub the stain out?
Scrubbing usually makes things worse. Blot or lift instead of rubbing, working from the outer edge inward so the stain does not spread.
What if the chewing gum stain has already dried?
A dried stain takes longer and may need repeated treatments, but the same agents still work — just re-wet the area gently first to reactivate the stain before treating it.
