I have exactly the same problem.

I've tried:

• Joomla assisted upgrade
• a manual upgrade
• Turning sh404SEF off
• backing up the SQL, uninstalling completely, installing from scratch and creating a test category with a test image.

All give me a blank front end (see http://www.rsy-netzer.org.uk/galleries/ ).

Any ideas?

I've reverted back to an earlier version of the component which works properly.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this issue, I'm happy to try them out and report back.
