Watermark disappears in download

I have successfully been able to get the watermark to apply upon the load to the gallery, but id like the watermark to stay via the download button.

When the photo downloads the watermark disappears...

How can i fix this, without having to pre-apply the watermark before loading?

Thanks

Hi,
When the photo downloads the watermark disappears...
Yes that`s right, because the downloaded images are the original images not the large thumbs.
There is no way to change this with settings.
Kind regards,
Benno

well i dont know how that makes any logical sense. whats the point of a watermark if it gets removed upon download?

The entire value of a watermark is to copyright the work, if one was to add a watermark to an image it would be safe to say that the watermark was intended to be permanent.

Can this be repaired in upcoming releases?

This renders the watermark feature useless via the download button.

its not really adding a feature, its repairing a bug.

find me one person who says, "oh yes i would like to waste my time by adding a watermark to have it removed the moment someone wants to download the file.."

Hi, search this forum where I have explained it many times.

The watermark is not removed from original images because it is never added to this images. Such images are not created by Phoca Gallery, so they cannot be changed by Phoca Gallery. Such images can be used for other parts of Joomla! site, can be uploaded by other than Phoca Gallery framework, etc, etc.

But the main reason is, original images are used while working with Phoca Galery. They are used for recreating images, for rotating images, for getting info about site, etc. and because of this they cannot be changed by Phoca Gallery nor "damaged" by e.g. watermark.

See:
https://www.phoca.cz/documentation/categ ... -component
https://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-g ... d-glossary

So if you need to have watermark on original images, this needs to be done by some software on your PC (there are a lot of different methods, you can use e.g. Phoca Gallery too and replace your original images with large thumbnails with watermarks on your server, etc.)

Yes, i understand the premise of how the software deals with the image, watermarking, and such.

The resolution to this is to make the download button pull the image from the /THUMBS directory rather than the original image. Rather than me have to go into the server and pull all those images down and then re-upload them again-- so that phoca gallery pulls the image from the right place.

This way when the option to place the watermark on the image is chosen, along with the download option it will pull the version of the image with the watermark applied rather than the original non-watermarked image.

That seems like thats how it would work, and it still does not seem like adding a feature but just resolving an issue.

Hi, such option needs to be customized :-( as the download original image was a feature request by many users, I think, changing it as default to download large thumbnails instead of original will be not accepted by many users :-(

I think you are confusing two different option features.

1. Sure, people may want an option so that they can download an original image. Though, i also bet that they either dont have the watermark enabled, or they watermark it before uploading into gallery.

2. When the watermark option is chosen, then the option to download original image should not be there and it should pull the watermarked version. Or whatever, have the option to pull the non-watermarked image, though i think thats not necessary.

To me, this sounds like a logical set of options to have available, and how the options should work when chosen.

I just dont believe ANYONE chooses to have a watermark applied, but then removed upon download by an end user. It just doesnt make any sense.

Say it out loud: " I am choosing to permanently brand my images with my logo but then when a customer goes to download my image my software removes the permanent brand that I opted to place on the image originally. "

Hi, for such behaviour you should use some download component e.g.

- display images with watermarks in gallery
- download images without watermarks in some download component (like Phoca Download is).

The reason is, in download component, you can have the images zipped e.g. and protected so they cannot be accessed through e.g. direct link (you can add the downloadable files "behind" public_html folder, etc.)

The parameters are independent to each other, sou you can set that your thumbnails will have watermark (mostly it does not make sense to download images with watermarks, they are used for displaying only). It protects your thumbnails against using them and you can hide the download button (and e.g. protect original images with some access settings, or remove them from server - to be sure, they are not accessible)

So:
2. yes, you can hide the download button - it depends on your parameter settings
