Where are folders created and files saved

I installed Phoca Download and everything is appearing on the front end, but when you click the links to the files, nothing happens.
In working through what could be wrong, I'm trying to rule out that it's a permission issue. I checked in the images folder and in the com_phoca folder and didn't see anything that matched the sections/categories I created, or the files themselves. Before moving on to other issues, I want to rule out the potential that the files/folders weren't created and either I didn't see the error message or none was created.
Am I looking in the right place for the folders/files. If not, where should I look? I guess also, to be thorough, I should ask if you think this problem could be caused by anything else I haven't mentioned. That would help me further track down the problem if it isn't a permission error.
