Phoca Gallery "image not loaded"

Hello,
I wanted to add 5 new images to my existing phoca gallery (already 40+ images). Also I did it the same way as before, obviously the thumbnails are not created. If I try it manually, I get the message "image not loaded", although the files are in the correct folder? Even if I try to recreate a thumbnail for an already existing image in the gallery (which worked fine before), the recreation results in the same error message "image not loaded" and the image isn`t displayed anymore?
I am using PG 4.4.2 and joomla 3.9.27
