Thumbnails on Category: cannot keep original (uncropped) dimensions for display.

I'm trying to migrate my old Galleryproject site to Joomla/Phoca. I want to keep the main page category thumbnails in their original dimensions.
I've tried messing with the crop option to not crop (none), but it's not working the way I expected (thumbnail photos are overlapping, quality degrades, other weird stuff I'm not sure why it's happening).
I'm no expert, but I know my way around joomla decently. Any help would be quite appreciated.
