Using aliases in links

I see all Phoca files have an alias (as do Joomla articles in general). I wanted to put a link in an article to a Phoca file.
I went to the menu where I had Phoca Download Section List Layout and clicked on it and then right-clicked on the link
to one of the files. It gave me
http://192.168.5.11/Joomla/index.php?op ... &Itemid=63
which is a very long URL to put in a link. This is also a file whose version can change, so if I ever change the file I will
have to go everywhere I put this link and replace it with a link to the new file.
What I want to do is be able to use the alias I gave this (like VPN_CURRENT or whatever alias I give it) and have that
be part of the link. Something like http://192.168.5.11/aliases/VPN_CURRENT (or something). Then when I replace
with a new file, the new file can be given the alias VPN_CURRENT and the one that was current could have a new
alias like VPN_VER1.1 or something.
Is there a way to do this? If it is the same way as doing it with regular Joomla articles that is great except that I don't
know how to do it with Joomla Articles either. Can someone enlighten me (or maybe it is not possible?).
Thanks
