Can't upload/select images (multiple), they appear as broken

First I uploaded images in different folders via FTP to the server.
When I want to add images to a category, I select "multiple add" first, select on the right side the Path & files (multiple), then the category on the left side with title, the images do not appear properly after save&close, they are listed but seem to be broken.
Does anybody know why or what I did wrong?
