Burning Question External Link Fail

Hello,
i add a image.
When i add an external link in the "External Link Options"
i cannot follow the link within the image on the fronted.
So i add an image, i then setup the external link but when i set the picture in an article with plugin> button.
It just shows popup without Any information, i try'd customizing detail etc etc. been there done that.
i just want to be able that, when public clicks on the gallery image, the instantly get linked to the linked page.
Shouldn't be that hard right?
