Error Mssg: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file

I am attempting to install PhocaGallery on a Joomla 3.0.4 platform at my new webhost, and I keep having lots of problems. I used PhocaGallery on my old host (with Joomla 1.7/2.x) with great results, but nothing seems to work to get a good install on my new Rochen hosting site.
I have researched the documentation and forum comments for the most common error message I get: ":Install: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file". I tried the suggestions for extraction of the zip on my local drive and then FTP to my host server. [Note: the instructions refer to a folder entitled "Front", which was not included in my unzipped download] It brings up the same error.
I then saw the news item about the release of PhocaGallery 3.0. Since I am running Joomla 3.0.4 at Rochen, I thought I would give it a try. When I uploaded and installed, the server returned a "404: Component not found" error.
As the volunteer webmaster for my local photography club, I really believe Phoca is the best all-around tool for integrating gallery features into our overall site. But I am stumped about how to proceed now -- and I am under pressure to get our site transfer completed. Help!
