Categories and Sub categories

Hi,
I love this component however I've spent ages customizing it just how I need it and have since found the Category and Sub Category system doesn't work as I'd expected.
Most galleries have separate pages for their Categories and Sub Categories but Phoca seems to put a link to the Gallery and Sub Category in one link. So for example:
Phoca Gallery:
If I had a main gallery called 'Cars' and a sub-category called 'Audi' it would display a link like so: 'Cars>>Audi'. On the category page.
Other Galleries:
Other galleries have one page for the original category 'Cars' and then another page for the sub category 'Audi'.
I don't understand why the Category system is done this way as I may as well name the original Category 'Audi' and the next one 'BMW' and so on rather than make them sub-categories to 'Cars'. If I have another gallery I want to call 'Fruit' I don't want the sub category of 'Apples' to be on the same page as 'Cars>>Audi' I need to be able to separate my sub categories onto a new page - is this possible? Or is it possible for me to implement such a feature?
Sorry if this sounded a little confusing.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
If I understand you correctly you want the categories view layout with 1 category at top?
You could make it right now with the 'hide' function in the 'component parameters' - or use the Phoca Gallery plugin and create an article with links to the categories you want.
Normal behaviour is when you click on a category in the categories layout (with small thumbs) you see the contents of this category in the category view layout (with medium thumbs).

Thanks for the reply although I dont think I explained myself well enough.
I would like my gallery to work over 3 separate pages:
Page 1: Main categories (E.G. "Fruit")
Page 2: Sub Categories (E.G. "Apples")
Page 3: Images of the sub category apples.
However if I create a category called "Fruit" and a Sub Category called "Apples" it displays a link on the main gallery page as "Fruit>>Apples". If I were to have dozens of different categories and sub categories for each one of those categories the page would be filled with links to galleries. Would it not be better to have separate pages for categories and sub categories like most galleries? Or am I missing something here?

Thank you. Can I display the sub categories as linkable text without the folder icons?

You can set in parameters - displaying categories without image... if it is not what you search, then you must change the html/php code

Hi, I have the same issue but in "big" proportions. I manage a website dedicated to cover various motor sports, so when I have to create a gallery, I must put it sub-categories. My site is structured like this:
Circuit>>first season>>20-12-2008
Circuit>>first season>>30-12-2008
Auto Shows>>qwertypalce>>01-01-2008
Auto Shows>>qwerrttxyzplace>>02-02-2008
...and so on....
The problem is thant when I link through menu to the gallery it displays me and endeless vertical list of all the categories, even categories, sub categories, etc.
Disabling "displaying subcategories" gets me a empty page. I would like only to have my 6 top categories on display, so when a user wants to navigate only to "Auto Shows" he should enter to the area where all auto shows events galleries are.
I attach a screen capture of what i'm talking about
Untitled-1.jpg
could someone help me with this problem ?
I also get problem reducing the blank space below the thumbnails...is there any way to reduce this?

Thanks in advance...Phoca Gallery is the best solution gallery for Joomla for me...thanks for the effort.

Hi,
is it true that you have 'display empty categories' disabled. And that the top categories don't contain any pictures?
If you enable 'display empty categories' and disable 'display subcategories', then you have a list of top categories.
Large space in box:
this could be because you have the name enabled (or the names of the folders only) and some other links, which doesn't show right now... You could try to play with the parameters in the category view.
with kind regards,
Carolien
