Slideshow Not Working

Firstly, thank you for making such a great component for us to use.
I've read the documentation but I'm still having a problem understanding the slideshow as mine is not working.
I am using Joomla 2.5.2 with Phoca Gallery 3.1.5. I have categories created. My images do show. When an image is maximized the image still is displayed. However, when I click on "play" for the slideshow while the image is maximized there is no image.
I read this page also: https://www.phoca.cz/documents/67-phoca- ... -slideshow. I don't understand how this applies to me.
On my site, images are listed as a menu item in the Main Menu. When that menu item is clicked you are taken to the "Photo Gallery" which contains categories (folders with images organized). You must click on a category to view images. When you click on that category you see thumbnails. When you click on a thumbnail the image maximizes. There is a "play" button there. When you click on it, there is no image.
My questions are as follows:
1. Do I need to install a slide show for this to work for MY example?
2. Is there a way to disable this "play" button in the settings? If so, how? If not, how do I delete it from the code so this button does not show? I need this site to be very simplistic. If creating a slide show is going to be hard, I'd rather do without it.
3. If the instructions on this page https://www.phoca.cz/documents/67-phoca- ... -slideshow are still correct for MY situation, there is a step missing as there is no option for "large thumbnails".
*Note: I do not want a separate slide show.
