Problem with sub-categories in Category View - SOLVED

I've been changing Global settings in order to make the following happen:
  • In Category view (List of Images) I do NOT want any sub-categories to be included in the list of images (the sub-categories appearing here are ugly and take up too much room)
  • I DO want sub-categories to be listed in the "Category View Settings (Categories above Images)"
OK, so I have been trying various settings in Global settings and find that, even though I switch on ALL relevant settings (e.g. "Display Categories in Category View", or "Display Categories View Back Button", and all similar ones), or if I switch them all off, nothing seems to change in the gallery in my site! And yes, of course I'm refreshing the page each time...

There seems to be a caching problem somewhere, but I don't think it's the browser, since I'm testing in Firefox 6.0, Opera 11.11, Safari 5.1 and Chrome 13.0.782, and in each of them I'm clearing the cache EVERY time I make a change to the Phoca Gallery settings. Clearly something is inhibiting the changed settings from appearing in the browser, but what?

I have to say I find all of these global settings very confusing, especially since, when you make a change, the popup window containing all the global settings disappears when you save the settings (PLEASE can you make this stay where it is until *I* close it?) , so you have to try to remember which of the settings you previously changed, and also when similarly-sounding titles appear to have little or no effect.

Getting frustrated,
Rob

OK, I can see what's going on now.

Global Settings, when accessed from the Phoca Gallery Control Panel, are valid for all instances of the Phoca Gallery object, AS LONG AS THOSE INSTANCES HAVE CHOSEN "USE GLOBAL" IN THE VARIOUS DROPDOWNS IN THEIR OWN SET OF PARAMETERS. Otherwise, the "local" parameter takes precedence.

So, my error was that I had an instance of the Gallery in my main menu, and was trying to change the behaviour of that instance by changing PG global settings.

:x WRONG - I should have gone to Main menu=>My Gallery and then Parameters - Component to change the behaviour of the page(s) accessed by this menu item.

Everything else falls into place
