Setup of categories in relation to the main menu item

I cannot figure out how to set it up so that after clicking the main menu item "Photos", the opening page shows all the category names listed in a column to the left, and the latest added sub-categories show up in the center of the body area?
Clicking a category link from the sidebar, should then show a listing of all the sub-categories in that particular category.
Any ideas would be much welcomed.

I have that part configured correctly. But when I click the main menu item, in the body is see this:
Category name > Subcategory name
What I want is to have a list showing only all the categories. And then, when clicking a category one will see another listing of all the subcategories. And finally, when clicking a subcategory link one will get to all the photos in that category.

Hi, if the main categories will have no images, you will see only categories, the images will be displayed only in subcategories which contain images.

Is it possible to configure it so that a list of all the categories appears in the sidebar even when one is browsing a sub category?

You can display list of categories in module, or you can display them above (but only the categories (sub) from the category):
