There is no menu for pagination on this page : index.php?option=com_phocagallery&view=category&id=8

but there is on this that has a direct link from the menu : index.php?option=com_phocagallery&view=category&id=8&Itemid=238

Yet I have enabled paging across. Why ?

Hi, pagination is a parameter of menu link, and every menu link has an Itemid, it means, the link without Itemid is wrong.
