Image size increasing on upload

Greetings,
I'm in development with this site which uses phoca gallery extensively:
http://66.147.244.165/~burnini2/index.p ... Itemid=80#
That particular page is an example of my issue. My client gave me jpgs with the exact compression level he wanted.

I see that the "JPEG Quality" setting in the Thumbnail Creation Settings effects both the thumbnail and the large image, so I tried setting it to 100%. After changing that setting I uploaded a jpg of 205 px. Once it was integrated into Phoca Gallery the size became 275 kb and the quality still didn't wasn't as clear as the original 205 px jpg. So I tried a png file which I uploaded at 165 px and Phoca gallery made it over 400 k. It looked perfect but it's too many k. Any suggestions?

thanks,
Hope

Hi,

you can set the quality of jpg in parameters.

Regarding the quality. All thumbnails are made by GD library on your server, so I think, this is then the issue to check your server - php and GD library :-(

Okay. Thanks Jan.

I just figured out a workaround. If images show up too compressed, I can rename and upload the originals to the THUMBS folder. Seems to work. CAn you think of a problem with that?

thanks,
Hope

Hi, no problems there, it does not matter who or what did create the thumbnails, important is the path and that it is an image.

Has anything changed in 3.2.1? I mean, it's fine if you have to re-upload 20 - 30 images but what if you're doing 100s at a time. It'd be nice if it could take the original image, properly sized, and then simply use that as the master image without having to re-compress it. That's where the issue is.

Thanks.

Hi, search this forum, I have added there info why the large thumbnail is important (there are at least 5 reasons for this - many time described in this forum)
