I'm slowly getting the hang on this, but I have another head-scratching problem...
So far I have two categories, assigned to two menu items, with each their template settings.

The parent menu "image gallery" opens on a "categories" link. All that works fine, but if I go back to the separate categories from the "categories" page instead of directly from the main menu, then its component settings take over, and I lose my two different looks... is there a way to "tell" the categories menu not to influence the child ?

you should disable SEF and check the itemid of the link, so you will know which parameters are active

Mostly, there is no option to set where the back button will go, because of sef, etc, the main link is found.
