Safari doesn't let me download files

Hi,
Everything seemed to work fine until I tried to download a file using Safari instead of Firefox which I had previously been using.
My files are accessible to registered users only, and so when a user clicks on the Download button, it takes them to a login page (which appeared automatically - I did not set this up myself). I entered my login details and it took me back to the file I wanted to download. I clicked on the Download page but instead of downloading the file, it took me to a page which said:
"You are currently logged in to the private area of this site".
When I used Firefox to download the file, it works fine. After I am logged in I click on Download and a window asking if I want to open or save the file appears, which is what I want to happen.
Why does this not work in Safari?
Thanks for any help,
Kelly
