Problem accessing folders created using non flash uploader

Hi
My object is to create some human readable order in my document store, but I am having problems with accessing folders created by the uploader
Using the non flash uploader, in FIrefox or Safari or Chrome, I can create a folder, and the folder becomes visible in the tree view above the upload file line. However when I click on that folder which I have just created, nothing happens. and when I upload the file it ends up in the root of the document store rather than in the target folder.
I'm sure that I'm doing something very basic wrong - could someone enlighten me? Sorry to pester the forum with such a basic question
