I use the Joomla Banner component and create banners for each of the categories with respective url links. It is a bit tedious but creates a much better visual product for the users. If there are more than a few categories, it probably would be too much to do and it requires a bit of maintenance to be sure the links are always correct. A side benefit is the ability to track clicks to gauge the popularity of any category.

I have used AcyMailing for newsletters and it is adequate, but the editor for creating the newletter form a Joomla articles is really lacking. I don't thing I want to buy to extension just for creating a slideshow.
