Hi, the problem of the slideshow is, it was primary not done as responsive, so I would say, in CSS, there must be different rules for different screen sizes done
Mostly because of today's responsive time, the slideshows are more done in modules like e.g. this slideshow:
https://www.phoca.cz/phoca-carousel-module
where the images are a part of background and there is better support for responsivity

ok! If you have different image sizes (portrait/landscape) you also will have an unwanted effect: you can see parts of the other image ...
So your advice ist: use a responsive slideshow
Not what i like, but there seems no other way ...

Yes and of course in any case unfortunately mixing portrait/landscape images in slideshow is the worst case in any slideshow
