Adapt to Apple HEIF or HEIC image formats

Post by richardh9935 »

Apple's devices now create HEIC or HEIF image formats, since about 2018.

Do I need to do anything to the images to make them appear in Phoca Gallery?

Hi,

Phoca Gallery has WebP support.

Mostly it does not depends on Phoca or Joomla but on server features. Gallery needs to have functions to create thumbnails on server, mostly this is done by GD, so it depends on GD, if there will be support for this. Then we can think about implementing it in Phoca Gallery.

There are a lot of new image formats available but in practive only few are used: jpg, png, gif plus webp a little bit. And it seems like all new formats get a lot of competition in form of JPEG XL which is a true image format (combared to others that are derived from video)

So back to HEIF/HEIC.

- Are they supported by server functions?
- Are they really better than standard formats: jpg/png/webp?
- Does it make sense to use them when there will be JPEG XL in future?
