solved: Heavy Problem with general picture upload and thumbnails - no image loaded

Phoca Gallery version: 4.3.18
Everything on the phoca Info tab is green exept Funktion imageCreateFromWEBP

for years phoca gallery runs fine on a website of mine. Suddenly though i cannot upload any new pictures anymore via phoca gallery.
Following symtpoms are present:
Uploading a picture via phoca gallerys uploader results in a blank preview picture in the upload window itself and i am getting following messages:

The thumbnail of the picture stays empty on the phoca uploader (though is fine on the joomla media manager)
Thumbnail generation says it does fine recreating the thumbnail but it wont work. The newly added picture only shows as blank image in the phoca gallery picture Overview itself and the frontend.
Clicking on the picture a error appears "no image loaded".
The servers error.log gives out no php errors either. I am totally at a loss here.
