Deleting photos from the front end

I am unable to determine how to delete photos from the front end. I have given upload and deletion rights in each category. When entering the category, the front end user is presented with the upload screen beneath the photos, and that works fine. However, there is no deletion option on the thumbnails nor on the upload screen. I tried the user control panel, but here the user is forced to develop their own categories rather than using preexisting categories, and there is no deletion option there either. What am I missing? Thanks for any advice.

Yes I had my settings as you suggest but still no delete icon on the thumbnails. It wasn't until I said "No" to the "Bootstrap 3 Icons" setting in general settings that the delete icon showed up. Thanks.

that would be the next question I would have: Do you use Bootstrap 3 icons ....
